What is the best time
to cold call?

Across six published studies and our own floor of 14,171 outbound calls, the strongest cold-calling windows are late morning (10 a.m. to noon) and late afternoon (3 p.m. to 5 p.m.) in the prospect's local time. The strongest days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Monday before 10 a.m. and Friday afternoon are consistently weak. The exact hour inside those windows depends on your ICP: our noon-ET number was 45.9% and our 5 p.m. number was 35.2% on the same floor. Pick a candidate window from the table below and test it against your own calls for two weeks.

What do published studies say about the best time?

Public roundups from 2024 to 2026 agree on the broad windows and disagree on the exact hour. The table below pulls the specific claim and the source for each one, re-opened on October 19, 2026. None of the six publishers in this table shares the raw dataset for independent checking, so each row reports a study's own claim without a check against raw calls. The two rightmost rows are the Sales Montana floor numbers from cold calling connect rates, included for a like-for-like comparison with the published roundups.

What does the Sales Montana floor show?

The connect rate on 14,171 outbound calls across 29 organizations was 40.4% overall, with 97 seconds average talk time on connected calls. The hour-of-day cut, in Eastern time, on weekdays only, with at least 1,000 calls per cell:

Hour (ET)CallsConnect rate
Noon (12 p.m.)1,19245.9%
1 p.m.1,67041.4%
2 p.m.1,58839.6%
3 p.m.1,81843.3%
4 p.m.1,85243.1%
5 p.m.2,01935.2%

Noon through 4 p.m. ET sat between 39.6% and 45.9%. The 5 p.m. cell dropped to 35.2%. Cells before 9 a.m. ET and after 5 p.m. ET did not clear the 1,000-call floor on our sample, so we do not report them. The weekday cut, all hours:

WeekdayCallsConnect rate
Monday2,60135.9%
Tuesday2,74841.9%
Wednesday3,05740.5%
Thursday3,11041.8%
Friday2,62341.6%

Tuesday through Friday sat inside a two-point band from 40.5% to 41.9%. Monday fell six points behind the rest of the week. Our Friday number sits above the "Friday is dead" pattern that several published roundups report. A floor that mixes warm callbacks and worked follow-ups shifts this. Cold-only ranges reported by other vendors tend to be lower. See cold calling connect rates for the method and the sample.

Why do the studies disagree?

Three reasons. First, each of the six studies in this table measures a different cut of the day. Some report connect rates (someone answered), some report "contact rates" (reached the decision maker) and some report demo-booking rates (positive outcome). Those three move in different directions. One study's "best hour" of 10 a.m. for connects and another's 4 p.m. for demos booked can both be right.

Second, the ICP changes the window. B2B buyers who sit at a desk from 9 to 5 answer the phone around lunch and before they leave. Owner-operators of small businesses answer early in the morning or after hours. A B2B SaaS cadence and a wholesale distribution cadence will pick different hours even on the same cold list.

Third, the floor matters. A pure cold list of unverified numbers sits well below a floor that mixes callbacks and worked second touches. Our 40.4% is a mixed-floor number rather than a cold-call-to-a-stranger benchmark.

How do I find my own best hours?

Published windows are starting points for your own tests. The honest process:

1. Pull your last 90 days of outbound calls. Group by hour in the prospect's local time zone, not yours. Count calls per cell and connected calls per cell, using a consistent definition (answered status and more than 30 seconds works as a working floor).

2. Keep only cells with at least 100 calls behind them. A connect rate of 60% on 10 calls is noise. Pool your reps so each cell has enough volume; one rep is rarely enough to decide anything.

3. Rank by connect rate and conversation rate separately. A conversation is a disposition your reps count as a real talk, not just a pickup. The highest connect rate is the hour that answers. The highest conversation rate is the hour that converts. If they differ, pick the window that fits your KPI.

4. Block the top three hours as your daily call block for two weeks. Re-check after each block. Keep the window if it holds. If the number drifts back toward the mean, treat it as a small-sample effect rather than a time-of-day pattern.

In Sales Montana, the floor-analytics view groups calls by hour and weekday and shows each cell's n so a manager does not have to pull the data by hand. The power dialer places the calls once the window is picked, and the cold calling script page gives openers that fit each window.

What else moves cold-call connect rates?

Timing is one lever among several, and it is rarely the biggest one. On our own floor the hourly connect rate moved by about ten points inside a six-hour window. The levers below move the number by more:

List quality. Verified direct-dial numbers connect at a much higher rate than scraped switchboard numbers, because fewer calls route through a gatekeeper.

Local presence. Showing a caller ID in the called area code lifts pickup rates. Carriers mark numbers "Spam Likely" based on call-volume patterns. One caller ID per rep per state, with CNAM registered, holds up longer than a single number dialing all states.

Call cadence. Six attempts spread across different hours and days give each prospect several chances to answer. One attempt per prospect depends entirely on the hour you happened to pick.

See best power dialers for tools that handle caller-ID rotation and cadence by rep.

Frequently asked

What is the best time to cold call?

The strongest windows across published studies and our own floor are late morning (around 10 a.m. to noon in the prospect's local time) and late afternoon (around 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.). The strongest days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Monday mornings and Friday afternoons are consistently weak. None of this is a prescription. On our own floor the hourly connect rate moved by about ten points inside a single six-hour window. Pick a candidate window from the data below and test it on your own calls for two weeks.

Is late afternoon or late morning better for cold calls?

Both show up as strong windows, in different studies and on our own floor. Published roundups put the late afternoon ahead on average, with the top window usually 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the prospect's local time. Our floor sent most calls in the afternoon. Our best hour was noon ET at 45.9%, with 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. within three points. The honest answer is to run both windows for your reps and keep the one with the higher connect and conversation rate.

Which day of the week is best for cold calling?

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, in that rough order. One ZoomInfo analysis of 1.4 million outbound calls found Tuesday and Wednesday accounted for 44% of demos booked. On our floor, Tuesday through Friday held between 40.5% and 41.9% connect rates. Monday fell about six points behind at 35.9%. Friday is usually weaker in published studies than our floor shows.

How long should I test a call window before trusting the number?

Two weeks of real volume per window. For a working rule of thumb: 100 calls per cell is enough to spot a bad hour, 1,000 is enough to compare two hours against each other with any confidence. If a window has fewer than 100 calls behind it, treat its connect rate as noise and keep calling.

What are the US legal calling hours for cold calls?

The federal TCPA restricts telemarketing calls to between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. in the called party's local time. State rules can be narrower (for example, several states cut off at 8 p.m.). This is not legal advice; see the full note on outbound dialer for sources.

Where did the numbers on this page come from?

Our own numbers come from 14,171 outbound calls on the Sales Montana platform between August 7 and October 18, 2026. The sample spans 29 organizations, 23 reps and 34 campaigns, aggregated with no customer named. A call is counted connected when Telnyx reported an answered status and the call lasted more than 30 seconds. Published-study numbers come from the sources named in the comparison table, each with the article's own date. We re-opened each source on October 19, 2026.
