An outbound dialer is software that places calls from a list for a sales or call center team, so reps stop dialing by hand. The five types are preview, power, progressive, predictive and parallel; B2B teams usually pick power or preview, large SDR floors use parallel, and consumer call centers use predictive.

What is Sales Montana?
Sales Montana is a power dialer and CRM for B2B teams. Montana, its AI head of sales, finds leads, reviews every interaction and tells each rep where to focus. He grades every connected call and writes each rep's morning brief. One flat price for the platform: Engine $99 a month for up to 3 users, or Pro $297 a month for unlimited users, billed monthly. We make Sales Montana, and it appears in the table below as one power dialer among several. About us.
An outbound dialer takes a call list and places the calls for you. A rep loads a list, starts a session and the software dials, detects who picked up, shows the contact record and logs the outcome (the call disposition). Most dialers also record calls, drop prerecorded voicemails and show a local caller ID. The part that varies is pacing: how many numbers the software calls for each available rep. That one setting decides your dial volume, your connect rate per hour and whether people who answer ever hear silence.
| Type | Lines per rep | How it works | Fits best | Abandoned calls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preview | 1, rep clicks to dial | Shows the record first; the rep reads it, then dials | Complex B2B accounts, enterprise sales | None |
| Power | 1, dials automatically | Dials the next number as soon as the rep logs the last call | B2B SDR and founder-led teams | None |
| Progressive | 1 or a fixed ratio | Dials only when a rep is free, at a set number of lines per rep | Mid-volume teams that want a steady pace | Rare, rises with the ratio |
| Predictive | Several, set by an algorithm | Dials ahead of free reps, predicting when each will finish | Large consumer call centers | Yes; capped at 3% for telemarketing |
| Parallel | Several, set by the rep | Calls a batch at once and bridges the first live answer to the rep | Large SDR teams on low-connect lists | Possible when two people answer |
The terms overlap. Vendors often say "multi-line" for parallel, and "auto dialer" covers all five. Our power vs predictive vs auto dialer page goes deeper on the two most common modes.
Start from what a conversation is worth. If one good call can become a five-figure deal, a rep should be ready when the prospect answers, which points to preview or power dialing. Preview suits named accounts where reps research before each call. Power suits list work, where the CRM record carries the context and speed matters more.
More lines raise dial volume, but they do not always raise meetings. Orum, which sells both modes, published data in September 2025 showing power dialing converted connects to meetings at about 6.4%, against about 3.8% for parallel. Parallel dialing pays off when connect rates are very low and the team is large enough to keep bridging live answers. Predictive dialing belongs to consumer call centers with many agents, short scripts and a compliance team watching the abandon rate.

This is a summary, not legal advice. Three US rules come up most:
What is an outbound dialer?
An outbound dialer is software that places calls from a list for a sales or call center team, so reps stop dialing numbers by hand. The five common types are preview, power, progressive, predictive and parallel dialers, which differ in how many numbers they call per rep and whether a rep is always free when someone answers.
What is the best outbound dialer for B2B sales?
For B2B teams where each conversation matters, a power or preview dialer usually fits best because every answered call reaches a prepared rep. Large SDR teams calling low-connect lists often choose a parallel dialer such as Orum or Nooks, and high-volume consumer call centers use predictive dialers.
What is the difference between a power dialer and a predictive dialer?
A power dialer calls one number per rep and dials the next only when the rep is free, so no answered call waits for a rep. A predictive dialer calls several numbers ahead of free reps and uses an algorithm to guess when one will be available, which raises volume but can abandon answered calls.
What is the 3% abandon rate rule?
FCC rules say telemarketers may abandon no more than 3% of calls answered by a live person, measured over 30 days for each calling campaign. A call counts as abandoned if no rep is on the line within two seconds of the person's greeting, and the caller must then play a short prerecorded identification and opt-out message.
Is a power dialer an autodialer under the TCPA?
Since Facebook v. Duguid (April 1, 2021), the Supreme Court has read the TCPA's autodialer definition to cover only equipment that stores or produces numbers with a random or sequential number generator. Dialers that call a list you uploaded generally fall outside that definition, but consent, calling hours, Do Not Call and abandonment rules can still apply, so check with counsel.
